The
Verde Canyon Railroad is Arizona's longest running nature show. The wilderness
of remote Verde Canyon, west of Sedona and nestled in the valley
below Jerome, is known for its picturesque setting and abundant
wildlife. Though it's possible to hike in the
canyon, by far the easiest way
to experience it is by riding the Verde Canyon Railroad. Take
a look at our Calendar of Events |
| This
first-class excursion train, made up of renovated passenger coaches and
open-air viewing cars pulled by vintage locomotives, travels a route along
the Verde River between Clarkdale and Perkinsville. The standard-gauge
rail line served mining operations from 1912 to 1953, then
re-opened as a tourist attraction in 1990. Today, riders embark from
the new Clarkdale depot on a four-hour, 40-mile round trip that includes
views of mining history, geological wonders, Sinagua Indian cliff
dwellings and wildlife from bald eagles to antelope.
Saturday
night Starlight rides depart at 5:30 p.m. and run from May through
September. The Verde Canyon Railroad has introduced the "Grape Train
Escape" (wine tasting train) as a continuing service, running from April through
September. This highly exclusive Friday evening train ride will
only accommodate 160 first-class passengers to experience the excitement
of wine and merriment under the stars.
